Lady in the Van: The Peppered Pig
Afternoon Tea in a van called Lola!
Hidden away off a country lane near Goole in the East Riding of Yorkshire is a place that has all the charm of a rustic barn-conversion and all the excellence of a serious player in the restaurant world. I know I’m getting straight to the point here. That’s how impressed I was.
The Peppered Pig is an unpretentious, laid back, cosy, welcoming restaurant at the bottom of a gravel drive, and food fans could be forgiven for not even knowing exists. It’s in East Cowick.
Sitting neatly in the corner overlooking farm fields proudly sits Lola. She is a resident VW camper van, doors invitingly open and as booked in advance of our arrival, afternoon tea was all laid out with vintage china on the table in the van.
As is the protocol for afternoon tea, the bottom tier of the plated display held sandwiches, with a Yorkshire appetite in mind, made using their own in house freshly baked bread. Today’s selection included ham from Anna’s Happy Trotterswith chutney from Mercers of York, and smoked salmon & Longley Farm cream cheese.
The middle tier had a selection of cakes and mini deserts, all made by their artisan pastry chef. My fav was the opera cake! But the shot glass of lemon meringue and lemon curd and jelly was pretty tasty.
Classically the top tier shows off the homemade scones and Mercers strawberry jam, not forgetting the clotted cream. Now, is it jam first and then cream…or cream then jam???
All this was served with a glass of bubbles, and a choice of teas.
Our friendly waitress, Jackie, made us feel very much at home in our own van! No rush, just a relaxing way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
The Peppered Pig also have a deli, Pigs Pantry, selling their freshly baked bread, buns and scones, pies and cakes and a small selection of food by Yorkshire producers.
And of course the restaurant adjoining the deli was busy serving Sunday lunches, and is also open in the evenings serving homemade and locally sourced food, their passion to present to discerning customers.
It’s so nice to know that here in Yorkshire we are blessed with so many great restaurants, and increasingly so, and I must say that The Peppered Pig is right up there. If you’re looking for a place to eat that is home to a menu that is stylish and refined, not to mention completely delicious, go along and try it.
